Turtle Nest Inn |
This was a really nice respite from the harsh winter we had (and I REALLY like snow) and it was time for some warmer weather.
There were some nice reefs right off our beach. The place we stayed is in Bodden Town, well off the beaten track and away from the hustle and bustle of 7 mile beach.
In reading my cursing guides, many people do not visit the Cayman Islands. I guess it's just too far out of the way and you'd have to beat back against the trade winds to get to the main Caribbean Islands. We did see some cruisers out in the Georgetown Harbor, but it's mostly large cruise ships. With a big swell coming in, the cruisers had to move their boats to Spotts Bay. This was exactly as the cruising guide described and here's a relocated catamaran.
You can see the waves breaking on the reef and the catamaran sitting just outside the breakers. We never did see them dingy in and the next day the swell had shifted and so had the boats, back to Georgetown.
There are a lot of wrecks off the Caymans but the water is beautiful. We saw lots of fish and other marine life during our snorkel trips and the reef was fairly healthy considering the large hurricane they had in 2004.
We were able to buy fresh red snapper from the local fisherman in Georgetown for $4.50 a pound. I just got back from our local fish store, and the same fish here was $18.95 a pound! This saving money by cruising idea has some merit!
